When Mother’s Day Began
The history of Mother's Day dates back to the times of ancient Greeks, who held festivities to honour the mother of the gods, Rhea. Early Christians then celebrated the Mother's day festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honour Christ’s mother, Mary. This was then expanded to include all mothers naming it as Mothering Sunday. In America after the Civil War Julia Ward Howe dedicated a day to peace which would historically be known from then on as Mother's Day.
Since these landmarks throughout history Mother's day grew more popular as did the tradition of cards and gift giving. Many countries throughout the world now celebrate Mother's Day but during various times of the year.
